At the Staten Island Compost Facility, run by Denali Water Solutions, up to 250 tons of organic waste are processed daily during peak seasons. Through shredding, screening and controlled composting in aerated piles, the waste is broken down by microbes and turned into dark, fertile compost. The city distributes this valuable material to residents, schools and community gardens – improving soil health and supporting urban green spaces.
This initiative is more than a waste solution. Organic waste makes up the largest share of household trash in the U.S., and when dumped in landfills, it generates methane – a major contributor to climate change. Composting offers a climate-friendly alternative.
New York’s mandatory organics separation programme is part of its long-term sustainability strategy. Though enforcement is set to resume in 2026, the message is clear; managing waste responsibly is key to a greener, healthier future.
